Trainings & Workshops

Education and training are key components of the Land Use & Integrated Planning program. NRPC periodically sponsors trainings and workshops, which are available free of charge to anyone interested in participating. These trainings typically take place in the evening and are meant to provide participants with a broad overview of a particular planning topic. No prior knowledge of the topic is required to attend.

Details ~ Join NRPC for an APA webinar brownbag lunch. Explore how incentives are created for sustainability. Who creates them? To whom are they given? At what level do they work best? What has been most effective over time? Panelists discuss both the tools and the underlying policy objectives. Hear about incentives, such as surcharges, fees, tax reductions, and how they have been implemented. Speakers assess how they have fared in different locations. Learn what can be applied to your circumstance. All AICP members will receive 1.5 CM credits. Bring your own lunch and we will provide beverages and dessert.

Right to Know Law and Meetings: Practical Information for Land Use Boards

Details ~ Christine Fillmore, Staff Attorney for the NH Local Government Center, will discuss the basics of RSA Chapter 91-A, NH’s Right to Know Law, including the law regarding public meetings and public records. This training will also address practical issues for running land use board meetings and the difference between meetings and hearings. If you have specific issues you would like to address, please let us know by Sept. 15.

Zoning Board of Adjustments Training

Details ~ This training is specifically designed for ZBA members. David Connell, Esq., Legal Services Counsel for NH Local Government Center, will discuss the decision making process, public hearing procedure, weighing evidence, motion & written decision, conditions of approval, variances, special exceptions, and court case & statutory updates.

Site Plan Review

Details ~ Participants will learn how to successfully read and interpret various elements of a site plan, including engineering terms and graphical symbols. NRPC staff will also provide tips and tools to markup plans, evaluate slopes and drainage, and more.

Transportation and the State Permitting Process

Details ~ McFarland Johnson staff will lead a discussion on how to identify and address local transportation issues, such as dangerous intersections. They will also cover how these issues fit into and are subject to the state permitting process.
