What is a Hazard Mitigation Plan and Why Prepare One?

Planning for natural disasters can reduce loss of life, injuries, and property damage. Hazard Mitigation Plans identify critical facilities and areas of concern throughout a municipality, analyze potential natural hazards and risks to these facilities, and prioritize mitigation measures to address the hazards. Municipalities are required to update their Hazard Mitigation Plans every five years in order to maintain eligibility for federal mitigation grants.

Potential natural hazards in the NRPC region include drought, earthquake, extreme temperatures, flooding, severe wind, lightning & hail, severe winter weather, tornado/downburst, wildfire, solar storms & space weather, and infectious disease.

Several communities, in conjunction with the Nashua Regional Planning Commission, are in the process of updating their Hazard Mitigation Plans. To view the project pages, click on the links below:
